Abstract:
We present studies of several techniques for improving identification of hadronically decaying W and Z bosons. The performance of various algorithms and the comparison between data and simulation are analyzed in events enriched in hadronically decaying W bosons. These studies use the full 2012 CMS dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7±0.5fb119.7 \pm 0.5 \: \text{fb}^{-1} from proton-proton collisions produced by the LHC at s=8TeV\sqrt{s} = 8 \: \text{TeV}. In anticipation of LHC Run II, performance studies of identification techniques in high pileup conditions and of substructure reconstruction for jets with high transverse momenta are performed using simulated events with highly boosted W bosons. We demonstrate that with just a few modifications to legacy techniques, performance for tagging weak vector bosons remain robust under extreme conditions that can be encountered in the upcoming run.
