Abstract:
Distributions sensitive to double parton scattering are investigated in the photon + 3 jets final state in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The data were collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 36 pb1^\mathrm{-1}~in 2010. The cross section σ\sigma~for a final state with a photon and a jet of transverse momentum pTp_\mathrm{T} >> 75 GeV together with 2 jets of pTp_\mathrm{T} >> 20 GeV, where the photon and jets are within the fiducial volume of the CMS detector, is measured to be 124.9 ±\pm 8.9 (stat.) ±\pm 22.6 (syst.) pb. The differential cross sections are measured as a function of the difference in azimuthal angles and the transverse momentum balance between the photon-jet pair and the di-jet pair. Further it is investigated whether additional contributions from double parton scattering can improve the agreement between the measured data and the Monte Carlo predictions.
