The experiment is based on the premise that phase transitions may be signaled by large fluctuations in the overall multiplicity or angular distribution of charged particles. An outer 4-pi detector measures multiplicity and pseudorapidity. A small subset of particles around y=0 is then studied in detail by a two-arm multiparticle spectrometer with good momentum resolution and particle identification. The detector is based on silicon technology and allows unbiased triggering at very high rates. For further details, please contact the Spokesperson, Prof. Wit Busza [MIT].
