Job description:
The High Energy Physics Group at Purdue University has an opening for a postdoctoral research associate to work on the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment.
The Purdue CMS group has extensive involvement in many aspects of CMS, including hardware, software, and physics analysis. We are pursuing an exciting physics program at the 13 TeV energy regime at the LHC. The current physics analysis activities of the group include measurements of Standard Model (SM) processes, the search for new heavy gauge bosons, and the study of the Higgs boson. In addition, our group plays an active role in detector upgrade projects using in-house facilities to design, develop, and build semiconductor detectors and their support structures. At Purdue we operate a Tier-2 computer center, providing resources for data analysis both locally and as part of the CMS computing Grid.
The successful candidate is expected to take on a leadership role in CMS Level-1 trigger upgrade and in advancing machine learning applications in CMS online (Level-1 and HLT triggers) data processing. The candidate is expected to work closely with the fast machine learning collaborative efforts (https://fastmachinelearning.org/), contributing to the R&D studies in realizing advanced machine learning algorithms on specialized hardware.
The candidate is also expected to lead physics data analyses aimed at precision studies of rare SM and Higgs processes or direct searches for new physics, working closely together with graduate and undergraduate students. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in experimental particle physics, excellent data analysis, computing and programming skills, and the ability to carry out an independent research program. The selected candidate can choose to be based at Purdue University, CERN, or the LHC Physics Center at Fermilab.
The position is available in September 2020 and to ensure full consideration, applications should be received by July 15th, 2020. The appointment is initially for one year, with the potential extension considered on a yearly basis thereafter. Questions and inquiries should be sent to Prof. Mia Liu (mliu@fnal.gov). Interested candidates should send a CV including a list of publications with major contributions and invited talks, a research statement, and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent directly to Prof. Mia Liu (mliu@fnal.gov). Applications will be considered until the position is filled.
Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity Affirmative Action Employer. Applications from minority and female candidates are encouraged.
