The Department of Physics and Astronomy at UCL is located in the heart of the historical area of Bloomsbury, in central London, UK. Scientific research and study has been a strong feature of UCL since its inception in 1826. UCL is one of the top-rated universities in the world. The Department of Physics and Astronomy aims to appoint a Lecturer in Data Intensive Science (DIS), in the newly established Centre for DIS and Industry. The Centre’s vision is to build on UCL’s leadership in this domain and offer innovative opportunities for: cross-disciplinary research in DIS; knowledge-exchange between DIS industry and academia; and world-class training in DIS at all levels of education. The appointment is a full-time position. 

We seek candidates with research experience and interests in Data Intensive Science, with priority the areas of Astrophysics and Particle Physics. The successful candidate will have a strong record of leadership in international, flagship DIS experiments at the forefront of fundamental science, as well as involvement and/or interest in applying novel Machine Learning and statistical techniques across research domains and in industry. Alternatively, they may have a background in AI via Computer Science with proven record in collaborative work in the areas of Astrophysics and/or Particle Physics. They will become a core member of the UCL Centre for DIS and Industry, hosted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and will have the unique opportunity to play a leading role in growing the Centre and contributing to its long-term success, through: forging cross-disciplinary collaborations within and beyond UCL; enhancing and expanding the links with DIS Industry partners; and strengthening the existing, successful training programmes of the STFC-UCL Centre for Doctoral Training in DIS and the MSc in Scientific and Data Intensive Computing.
