Job description:
The Institute for Particle Physics and Astrophysics (IPA http://www.ipa.phys.ethz.ch/) of ETH Zurich invites applications for two Graduate Student positions in experimental Particle Physics, to work on the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.
The IPA CMS group has a strong involvement in physics analyses, in the operation of the electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) and pixel detector together with their (phase 2) upgrades in view of the HL-LHC, and has a research line devoted to generic R&D for radiation hard diamond detectors.
The group is looking for outstanding applicants on the M.Sc level, ideally already with some research experience in Experimental Particle Physics, adequate programming skills, and a strong interest in detector development.
One project position focuses on silicon pixel detector module developments for the phase 2 upgrade of the CMS experiment. Depending upon mutual interest, this position provides the possibility to complement the work on detector development with the involvement in collider data analysis using the CMS experiment.
The second project position focuses on generic R&D of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamonds as sensor material in future pixel detectors. The candidate is expected to join the group effort in the development of 3D diamond detectors (where electrodes are created inside the bulk of the sensor). The subject of the thesis will be the study of the radiation hardness of 3D diamonds. The tasks will include the design of 3D sensors, their production and irradiation (performed in collaboration with external companies and universities), and the characterization of irradiated 3D diamond sensors in test beam experiments including data reconstruction and analysis.
Candidates are required to actively participate in the teaching activities of the Physics Department.
The initial term of the position is three years, with a possible initial probation period of one year. Interested candidates are asked to submit their application by 30 August 2021 together with a letter of motivation, the names and addresses of two referees and a curriculum vitae. The application should be sent via email only to ipa-cms-phd@phys.ethz.ch. Recommendation letters will be solicited from the provided contact information as appropriate.
Inquiries concerning the position can be made to Prof. Rainer Wallny (rainer.wallny@phys.ethz.ch). The envisaged start of the contract is 1 October 2021 or later upon mutual agreement.
