Deadline on Apr 30, 2023
Job description:
Applications are invited for PhD positions in the subjects of High Energy Theory, Mathematical Physics and String Theory, covered by the SwissMAP collaboration. The PhD positions are fully funded for four years and they start in the Fall of 2023.

The call is open until the positions are filled. However, the deadline for full consideration is 19/03/2023.

Participating institutions:

The selected candidate will join the Fields and Strings Laboratory led by Joao Penedones or the Laboratory for Theoretical Fundamental Physics lead by Victor Gorbenko, and develop research in the context of Quantum Field Theory, String Theory, Quantum Gravity, Cosmology or related topics. The Physics doctoral school at EPFL offers advanced courses and a stimulating environment with about 200 students. The High Energy Theory group at EPFL covers many research areas including field theory, high energy phenomenology, physics beyond the Standard Model, cosmology, supersymmetry, string theory, gauge/gravity duality and the conformal bootstrap. The group has strong scientific ties with nearby CERN.

The successful candidate will join the group led by Julian Sonner, working on string theory, holography and its applications, as well as quantum gravity and related topics. Admitted PhD students, in addition to carrying out their own research, follow advanced level instruction in the context of our doctoral school. The department of theoretical physics at the University of Geneva offers a vibrant atmosphere with a broad set of expertise, spanning from condensed matter to cosmology, particle phenomenology, gravity and mathematical physics, as well as string theory and holography. Members of our department benefit from our close association with the nearby CERN theory department as well as the wider Swiss community, through our National Center for Competence in Research “The Mathematics of Physics", led by the University Geneva in conjunction with ETH Zürich.

The CERN Theory Group aims to foster fundamental research in all fields of direct relevance for High Energy Physics, including cosmology, high-energy astrophysics, field and string theory. CERN-TH has a wide range of scientific activities which apart from regular seminars include CERN-TH Institutes, visitor program, workshops, schools and conferences. CERN-TH keeps close scientific ties with neighbouring institutions such as the University of Geneva and EPFL. The selected candidate will be based at EPFL and CERN and work under supervision of Alexander Zhiboedov.
