Job description:
Summary:
Pontificia Universidad Católica (PUC) is one of the five universities that host the Millennium Institute for Subatomic Physics at the High-Energy Frontier (SAPHIR).
In a joint effort, PUC and SAPHIR are looking for a postdoc for ongoing or new projects in experimental particle physics for the ATLAS experiment and also in future colliders likes FCC.
PUC works at an international scientific center, CERN (in French Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire, Geneva, Switzerland) including ATLAS, CLIC and, in the future, with FCC collaboration. PUC has a theoretical particle physics group as well, highly collaborating with the experimental group.
Also, SAPHIR is an institute collaborating at CERN including ATLAS, NA-64, SND@LHC experiments, and also, JUNO experiment (China), Brookhaven National Laboratory (USA).
Successful candidates will have a background in theoretical and experimental high energy physics, machine learning and artificial intelligence. The candidate is expected to spend a substantial amount of time on-site at PUC and SAPHIR in Chile.
Qualifications:
Desirable qualities include demonstrated experience in selected topics (Ph.D. thesis defended no more than 3 years ago ); some overlap with the scientific and technical program already underway at PUC and SAPHIR; a vision for making positive scientific, technical and societal impacts on Chile as well as internationally; and an affinity for working collaboratively on projects with other people, such as students, professors, and other scientists and engineers. Ability to work in an international research center abroad Chile will be an important criterion in the selection of candidates. Experience in data analysis and application of machine learning models is desirable.
Context:
Millennium Institute for Subatomic Physics at the High-Energy Frontier (SAPHIR) has a broad ongoing program that spans theoretical and experimental particle physics, high-energy nuclear physics, applied and environmental physics, high performance computing, and engineering research in the areas of electronics, mechanics and optics. Local facilities operated and supported by the SAPHIR include a particle physics detector development laboratory, an electronics design and fabrication laboratory, and heterogeneous computing farm. UNAB and PUC, which host the SAPHIR, are the leading universities in Chile with a primary focus on science and engineering. That’s why it attracts many talented students at all levels who will be fully integrated into the SAPHIR's projects. The five universities have departments of Physics, Informatics, and Electronics Engineering represented in the SAPHIR, all have well-established Master’s and PhD programs.
In particular, at PUC, there is a theoretical particle physics group, specialized in dark matter, higgs physics and beyond the standard models. The experimental particle physics group is specialized in data analysis using the ATLAS detector and also using simulated samples from CLIC. All in the context of Higgs physics and long-lived particles. It also has experience in upgrade project in ATLAS (New Small Wheel constructing sTGCs) and a future involvement with Itk upgrade (Hardware and Software) is foreseen in the next years.
Appointment period: The duration of these positions is initially for 2 years, with the possibility of a renewal for next 2 years, depending on the results of midterm evaluation. Also, it is required to apply for governmental grants for postdocs in Chile.
Deadline: Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
How to apply: Applicants should provide a cover letter, curriculum vitae. In addition, the contact information for three reference letter should be provided. We will request letters as necessary.
Questions regarding this position may be directed to Prof. Francisca Garay Walls (fmgaray@uc.cl).
A Ph.D. or equivalent in high energy physics is required. Review of Applications begins in 7th of April 2023 and will continue until the position is filled.
All application materials should be transmitted by e-mail to Prof. Francisca Garay (fmgaray@uc.cl).
