Job description:
The LAPP (Laboratoire d’Annecy de Physique des Particules) laboratory, which is part of the IN2P3/CNRS institute, invites applications from excellent candidates for one software engineer and two postdoctoral research associate positions to work on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The work is funded through the ERC Consolidator Grant DITTO (2023-2028). The goal of the DITTO project is to provide a complete set of differential cross-section measurements for dilepton production (Drell-Yan scattering) covering not only the light lepton channels ev/μv/ee/µµ, but also extremely challenging third generation τv and ττ final states. These high mass Drell-Yan scattering measurements, based on the combined LHC Run 2 (2015-2018) and Run 3 (2022-2025) data sets, will be used to probe new phenomena at mass scales beyond the reach of direct production at the LHC through the Standard Model effective field theory framework.
To ensure the best possible precision of these measurements, the DITTO project team at LAPP will work on the innovative improvements to the ATLAS electron and tau-lepton reconstruction and identification algorithms in both real-time (trigger) and offline physics analysis environments applying the cutting-edge machine-learning techniques. This work will be done in the latest implementation of the ATLAS software framework Athena [https://atlassoftwaredocs.web.cern.ch/athena/athena-intro/] and tested in the data being collected by the ATLAS experiment during Run 3. The performance improvements will need to be implemented in a way to facilitate their application in the High Luminosity LHC ATLAS trigger environment (2029+), which will be based on a hybrid architecture (the exact technology CPU/FPGA, CPU/GPU, etc. to be chosen in mid-2025).
The positions are based at LAPP, with the possibility to travel to CERN regularly (50 km from LAPP). The positions will be initially for a period of two years with a possibility of an extension.
Candidates for the software engineer position should hold an Engineering degree or doctorate (BAC+5 and more) in computer science or particle physics. More details on the position and skills requirements can be found at https://emploi.cnrs.fr/Offres/CDD/UMR5814-LOUDAI-010/Default.aspx?lang=EN.
Postdoctoral research associate candidates should hold a Ph.D. degree in particle physics, obtained less than 7 years before the starting date of the position. [Updated on July 8th 2023: Both postdoctoral research associate positions are filled now.]
Application:
Applicants must apply on the CNRS Job Portal https://emploi.cnrs.fr/Offres.aspx:
- submit a cover letter explaining their interest in the position and a detailed curriculum vitae (containing a description of their research experience with a list of publications highlighting their personal contributions);
- Have referrals to send at least 2 letters of recommendation directly to lapp_administration_rh_secretariat@lapp.in2p3.fr.
Selection will be carried out starting from June 2nd 2023, until the positions are filled, with priority given to candidates who apply before that date. The positions should start on October 1st 2023 or shortly after.
Further information on the positions can be obtained by sending e-mail to lapp_administration_rh_secretariat@lapp.in2p3.fr
