Job description:
We are looking for candidates in theoretical particle physics. Specific research topics relevant for the positions include, but are not limited to, precision calculations of observables in the Standard Model and possible extensions, collider physics, quantum chromodynamics, leptogenesis, flavour and neutrino physics, and model building.
Applicants should have a PhD degree when starting the positions and are expected to have solid knowledge of theoretical particle physics.
Further information on these positions can be obtained from the program leader of the theoretical physics group, Prof. Dr. Robert Fleischer (robert.fleischer@nikhef.nl).
Nikhef is the Dutch national institute for subatomic physics. At Nikhef, approximately 220 physicists and 75 technical staff members work in an open and international scientific environment. Together, they perform theoretical and experimental research in the fields of particle and astroparticle physics. The Nikhef institute is a collaboration between six major Dutch universities and the Dutch Foundation for Scientific Research (NWO). Among the research collaborations Nikhef participates are the ATLAS, LHCb and ALICE experiments at CERN, the KM3NeT neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean, the VIRGO interferometer in Pisa, the Xenon-nT dark matter experiment in Gran Sasso, the Pierre Auger cosmic ray observatory in Argentina and the eEDM research programme in Groningen. There are also scientific groups on Physics Data Processing and detector R&D a Theoretical Physics.
The group
The activities of the Nikhef theory group (https://theory.web.nikhef.nl) include higher-order calculations and jet physics in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics, parton distribution functions and parton showers, flavour and neutrino physics, effective field theories, precision tests of the Standard Model, cosmology and gravitational waves. The Nikhef theory group and Nikhef as a laboratory provide a stimulating environment with many seminars, colloquia, and journal club meetings, including interactions with the experimental groups and other Dutch theoretical physics groups.
Offer details
The initial duration of the position is two years, with the possibility of an extension to a third year subject to available funding. The conditions of employment are excellent, and include a competitive salary, extra months' salary payment in May and December, and an adequate allowance for travel and consumables. The starting date of the position is expected to be in autumn 2024.
Application submission
Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply through the application website https://www.nikhef.nl/en/vacancies/. Please be prepared to upload a curriculum vitae, a brief motivation letter and a statement of research interests, as well as to give the email addresses of at least three referees to send letters of recommendation on your behalf. Only applications received before the 10th of December 2023 will receive full consideration.
All qualified individuals are encouraged to apply.
