Job description:
The C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics (YITP) at Stony Brook University
(http://insti.physics.sunysb.edu/itp/www/) seeks applications for one tenure track Assistant Professor position
in Theoretical Physics, with a start date of September 1, 2024. The YITP has special interest in candidates
with demonstrated ability to contribute to fundamental areas in quantum field theory and/or string theory and
their manifold applications, including quantum gravity and condensed matter physics.
The person holding this position will report to the Director of the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics,
Stony Brook University. The successful applicant will be expected to engage in independently funded
research characterized by creativity and vision, and in mentorship and educational training with a
commitment to inclusivity.
This faculty member will perform research on topics of the member’s choice in fundamental areas of quantum
field theory and/or string theory, broadly defined, possibly in addition to other topics in theoretical physics.
The faculty member may collaborate with any other members of the YITP and Department of Physics and
Astronomy with shared interests, as well as with peers at other educational institutes and research
laboratories.
The faculty member will teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses at the Department of Physics and
Astronomy and will be expected to encourage and participate in the research and mentorship of a diverse
body of graduate students and postdoctoral associates. The faculty member will also participate in
departmental, university and professional service.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
PhD degree or foreign equivalent in theoretical physics or closely related field, with an established record of
outstanding independent research, including experience in fundamental areas of quantum field theory and/or
string theory, broadly defined, possibly in addition to other topics in theoretical physics.
Preferred Qualifications:
The ability to contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the Institute, Department and University,
as illustrated, for example, by experience working with a diverse student body.
Application Instructions

About Stony Brook University
Stony Brook University, one of four research-intensive campuses within the State University of New York
(SUNY) system, is widely regarded as its flagship. The University embraces its mission to provide
comprehensive undergraduate, graduate and professional education of the highest quality, and its rankings
bear that out. It’s included among the top 1% of universities in the world by the 2018 QS World University
Rankings and among the top 40 public universities by U.S. News & World Report’s 2020 Best Colleges
rankings. It is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, composed of the top 62
research institutions in North America. As Long Island’s largest single-site employer, Stony Brook has nearly
15,000 full- and part-time employees, including more than 2,700 faculty. It enrolled roughly 26,800 students
in fall 2019 — 17,900 undergraduate students and 8,900 graduate students — and offers more than 200
majors, minors and combined-degree programs. The Department of Athletics supports 18 Division I varsity
intercollegiate athletic programs that compete at the highest level within the NCAA. Located approximately
60 miles east of Manhattan on Long Island’s beautiful North Shore, Stony Brook is situated on 1,454 wooded
acres, encompassing 13 schools and colleges; a Research and Development Park; world-class athletics
facilities, including an 8,300-seat stadium and a 4,000-seat arena; and Stony Brook Medicine, Long Island’s
premier academic medical center. Also part of the University is a teaching and research campus in
Southampton, New York, which offers graduate arts programs and is the site of the Marine Sciences Center.
In addition, Stony Brook has a role in running, and performs joint research with, Brookhaven National
Laboratory, the only Department of Energy Laboratory in the Northeast. Home to the Emerson String Quartet,
the Pollock-Krasner House in East Hampton, NY, and the Humanities Institute, with endeavors that extend to
the Turkana Basin Institute in Kenya and the Ranomafana National Park in Madagascar, Stony Brook sustains
an international reputation that cuts across the arts, humanities, social sciences and natural sciences.
About the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics
Established in 1966, the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics (YITP) has been a leading center for research
in theoretical physics since that time. All YITP faculty members are also members of the Department of
Physics and Astronomy at Stony Brook, and count among their number the permanent physics faculty of the
Simons Center for Geometry and Physics. Research fields currently represented at the YITP include, but are not
limited to, quantum field theory, string theory, particle theory, cosmology, quantum information, condensed
matter and statistical mechanics. The mission of the YITP is the advancement of knowledge through research,
mentorship and training. YITP faculty members teach at the graduate and undergraduate level, and often
participate in outreach. The Institute has a tradition of collaboration with the Departments of Physics and
Astronomy, the Department of Mathematics and the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics at Stony Brook, and
with Brookhaven National Laboratory, and has many contacts to research centers worldwide.
