The experimental high energy physics group at the Jozef Stefan Institute (JSI) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position in experimental particle physics with applications in medical imaging.

We are looking for candidates to join our research efforts in the framework of CherPET, a proof-of-concept ERC project, an offspring of the ERC Advanced Grant experimental particle physics project FAIME, https://faime.ijs.si. The CherPET project aims at applying the detectors developed in particle physics to advances in medical imaging methods.

The JSI group is currently comprised of 6 faculty members, 4 postdocs, and 4 graduate students. A sizable part of the group which is by now very international, is at least part-time involved in the detector R&D of Cherenkov detectors and their applications in medical imaging, https://photodetectors.ijs.si. In case you have not been there before, Ljubljana is a vibrant, easy-to-navigate capital with easy road access to the Alps, the Adriatic, and places like Venice, Vienna, and Munich.

We seek candidates who can play a leading role in the development of an advanced detector for annihilation gammas in positron emission tomography (PET). The new device will be based on a matrix of PbF2 crystals coupled to a novel single-photon sensor, a large area MCP-PMT, Large Area Picosecond Photon Detector (LAPPD). Involvement in the development of an ultra-fast annihilation gamma detector based on LYSO crystals and SiPMs would also be possible, https://petvision.org/.

The successful candidate will be based at JSI, with possible short stays for dedicated detector tests at CERN, Geneva, or the KEK lab in Japan. The position is for one year, with a possible extension.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Physics and research experience in HEP instrumentation, medical physics instrumentation, or experimental elementary particle physics.
