Job description:
Postdoc for advanced detector development.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Hawaii at Manoa has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral associate working in advanced Time Projection Chamber (TPC) development with applications in experimental high-energy, astroparticle, and nuclear physics. The expected start of employment is approximately Aug 1, 2024, but is flexible. Note that experience with TPCs or gas detectors in general is not required. The position is renewable annually for up to five years, depending on availability of funding and satisfactory performance.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to play a leading role in the development of a tabletop gas TPC to be used in testing and validation of next-generation detector technologies. The project will involve the full stack of detector development tasks, including simulation, design, fabrication, testing, operation, and data analysis. Aspects of the project may include close collaboration with and frequent travel to labs in the US, Asia, and Europe. Additionally, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to help test and characterize novel detector technologies for liquid Argon TPCs.
Minimum qualifications:
A PhD in a relevant field is required. Relevant fields include but are not limited to high-energy, astroparticle, accelerator, and nuclear physics. Candidates from other backgrounds, including any relevant scientific and engineering disciplines, are encouraged to apply.
Desired qualifications:
We seek a motivated candidate with a passion for detectors and with a strong track record of productive, creative, and collaborative work. No specific experience is required, but previous work that illustrates this passion will be beneficial. We encourage applicants to highlight their talents, skills, or interests of any relevance to the practice and dissemination of experimental physics.
Compensation:
We offer a competitive stipend, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
To apply:
Please submit a single PDF containing:
- A cover letter summarizing your interests and qualifications in no more than one page
- A CV, summarizing your academic and professional experience in no more than three pages
- A list of professional references
- A concise summary of your past research in no more than three pages
- A list of publications, with your contribution to each clearly stated
Arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to peter.mandeville.lewis@hawaii.edu.
All material should be sent to peter.mandeville.lewis@hawaii.edu as a single PDF, with the subject “UH TPC postdoc application”. Applications received by June 1, 2024 will receive highest priority, but we will continue reviewing applications until the position is filled.
