Job description:
For our location in Zeuthen we are seeking:
PhD student - ATLAS group at DESY in Zeuthen
Limited: 3 years | Starting date: earliest possible | ID: APDO002/2024 | Deadline: 30.04.2024 | Full-time/Part-time

DESY, with more than 3000 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the
fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

The position is within in the ATLAS group at DESY in Zeuthen. The group works on top-physics, di-Higgs searches and searches for new particles, especially dark matter. On the technical side the group works on flavour tagging, electron and photon identification and luminosity measurement. For the LHC upgrade the group builds silicon strip modules to be used in one of the endcaps of the new silicon tracker.

The successful candidate will work on searches exploiting proton-proton collision final states involving low energy (soft) b-jets. Such particles represent characteristic signals of certain new physics models, such as Supersymmetric models with nearly-degenerate third generation squarks and neutralinos or cascade decays of light Higgs partners. In addition, he or she will contribute to the assembly of the silicon strip modules.

About your role:
  • Analysis of ATLAS data
  • Contributions to the soft-b-tagging software
  • Contributions to the construction of silicon strip modules
About you:
  • Master`s degree in physics
  • Interest in data analysis and detector construction
  • Some experience in python or root or in detector hardware
  • would be an advantage

DESY in Zeuthen does not grant doctoral degrees directly but collaborates with the University of Potsdam or the Humboldt University. Candidates for thesis research will have to satisfy the terms of admission for doctoral theses of the University. PhD students receive a monthly salary of 67% of the payment of the remuneration group 13 TVöD (Federal Government).
