Job description:
The FCC and ATLAS teams at IJCLab, Orsay are opening a two-year post-doc position to work on the development of detector concepts for the FCC project, and on the ATLAS experiment.
The FCC team is strongly involved in the feasibility study of the future e+e- circular collider FCC-ee project, with the exploration of the expected physics performance in the Higgs and in the heavy flavour sectors, and with the development of detector concepts. In particular, the team is working on the simulation and on the R&D of a novel noble-liquid-based calorimeter concept (Allegro Ecal) in the context of the DRD6 collaboration on calorimetry. IJCLab directly collaborates on the Allegro Ecal project with CERN and other labs on the R&D of readout electrodes and readout electronics, with a goal to build a first testbeam module by 2027. Several generations of prototype components are designed, built and characterized in that aim. Several generations of electrode prototypes have been already produced, while the work on readout electronics is expected to start in 2025.
The ATLAS team at IJCLab has been involved in the ATLAS experiment since its origins, with major contributions to detectors, reconstruction performance, and physics analyses. It takes part in the upgrade projects of the Liquid argon calorimeter electronics, of the central inner tracker, and of the high granularity timing detector. The physics activities are focused on the Higgs boson and electroweak (vector boson scattering) physics.
The successful candidate is expected to share its research between the FCC and ATLAS activities. The primary responsibilities in the Allegro Ecal project will involve working with the physicists and engineers on the characterization of the electrodes and readout electronics prototypes, as well as exploring and optimizing the expected performance of the calorimeter design in simulation. Additionally, the candidate will take part in one of the projects of the ATLAS team, either in Run 3 physics analysis or in detector upgrade developments, according to his/her preferences.
Highly qualified and motivated applicants should have a Ph.D. in experimental particle physics by the time of appointment.
Experience in collider physics and experience with detector development would be highly appreciated but are not mandatory. The applicants should send, by June 30th 2024, a curriculum vitae that includes a description of the research experience, a list of publications, and a motivation letter. The applications should be made on the official website:
but applicants are also encouraged to contact directly Nicolas Morange (nicolas.morange@ijclab.in2p3.fr). They should also arrange to have at least two letters of recommendation sent to the same email address.
