Deadline on Oct 20, 2024
Job description:
Experimental Nuclear and Particle Physics Center offers a post-doctoral position in experimental particle physics to analyze proton-proton collision data recorded with the CMS detector and to contribute to the CMS Tracker Phase II upgrade

The position lasts for 12 months and can be extended for an additional longer period.

Vilnius University (VU) is one of the oldest higher education institutions in Eastern and Central Europe. It tops the ranking as the number one university in Lithuania and leads the country in education, a broad spectrum of fundamental and applied research, training and retraining programs, and consultancy services and provides research and development services to a wide range of businesses. VU offers dynamic research and training environment and is well integrated into a collaborative network of international universities.
VU Faculty of Physics research teams contribute to experimental particle physics research at the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The applied physicists are also involved in DRD3 and DRD6 Collaborations. The experimental data analysis group performs the CMS data analysis, contributes to both the CMS Tracker Phase II upgrade and the central M&O activities. The CMS data analysis exploits computational infrastructure of the LHC Computing Grid. The primary analysis focuses on precise differential measurement of the quark-antiquark annihilation reaction with the emergence of a charged lepton-antilepton pair (the Drell-Yan process). Contribution to the DAQ software targets the upgraded Pixel detector to be installed in 2026. The test site for the Tracker extension pixel modules (TEPX) is being prepared.
The candidate will contribute to the TEPX testing site activities, perform the CMS data analysis (Drell-Yan, HH, or Majorana neutrinos), and contribute to experimental particle physics lectures. Taking on an FCC-related task or student supervision might be requested. Staying in Lithuania and visits to CERN are expected.

Requirements
-         PhD degree in experimental particle physics (obtained less than 5 years ago).
-         Good written and spoken English.
-         Experience with large-scale data analysis, good knowledge of electronics, and hands-on experience in a scientific lab will be considered an advantage.
-         Candidate is expected to work on-site in Vilnius University Saulėtekis Campus for the most of the contract duration.

We offer
-         The postdoc contract starting from 5 January 2024 (negotiable).
-         Gross salary of min. 2550 EUR/month for the first year. There is a possibility to increase the salary upon achieving the required results if qualifications are met.
-         At least one 1 month stay at CERN (with cost-of-living adjustment) per year.
