Job description:
The experimental particle physics group of Prof. Christian Herwig at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) invites applications for a postdoctoral research fellow, to be associated with the ATLAS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
The Michigan ATLAS group carries out a diverse physics program including Higgs, electroweak, and searches for new phenomena, and plays a central role in the operation of the Monitored Drift Tube (MDT) system. The group is deeply involved in the Phase-II upgrade of ATLAS, constructing the sMDT detectors and associated readout electronics, as well as developing innovative trigger strategies to further increase the physics potential of the LHC dataset. The successful candidate will be expected to lead a unique physics program at ATLAS, and make significant contributions to the experiment.
Prof. Herwig's group is also developing the Light Dark Matter Experiment (LDMX) to search for sub-GeV dark matter candidates with a fixed-target electron beam setup at SLAC, using LHC detectors and fast electronics. The successful candidate may also contribute to this effort, with potential opportunities from the experiment's construction to operation and analysis of first data.
Applicants should have a PhD in physics or a related field by the start date, and a background of demonstrated excellence in research.
Candidates should send a statement that describes their past experience and future interests as well as a curriculum vitae to herwig@umich.edu. Candidates should also arrange for three individuals to provide letters of recommendation, which they may send directly to the same address.
Consideration of applications will begin on October 10th and continue until the position is filled. For general information about this position or any questions, please contact Prof. Christian Herwig at herwig@umich.edu.
