Job description:
The LHCb Group at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Budapest, invites applications for a PhD position in experimental high energy physics. The successful candidate will join the Lendulet Group, led by Dr. Racha Cheaib, a recipient of the 2024 Lendulet grant awarded through the Momentum Program by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
Our group conducts leading research in the LHCb experiment, focusing on searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model. Key areas of interest include studies of Lepton Flavour Universality Violation, particularly within the baryonic sector. The group is also actively involved in the upgrade of the LHCb calorimeter (PicoCal), specifically in evaluating photomultiplier tube configurations for the HL-LHC upgrade.
The PhD candidate will have a unique opportunity to:
- Take an active role in physics analyses, focusing on measurements of observables in semileptonic decays of Lambda-b baryons and other b-quark excited states.
- Develop isolation algorithms critical for background suppression in Run 3.
- Engage in hands-on work within ELTE’s ECal lab and contribute to data-taking and detector shifts for the LHCb experiment.
- Undertake extended research visits to CERN (up to and over 1 month).
Qualifications: Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Physics or a related field, with some experience in data analysis, programming (C++, Python), and collaborative research environments. Prior experience in high energy physics or detector technology is a plus.
Application: Interested candidates should send a CV, a brief research statement, and contact details for three references to Dr. Racha Cheaib at rcheaib@cern.ch. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.
ELTE is committed to equal opportunity and values diversity in its research environment.
