Job description:
The DESY Theory Group announces an opening for a Ph.D position within the Emmy Noether Research Group "Cornering New Physics with Generic Precision Calculations" led by Dr. Johannes Braathen. The group investigates precision calculations – in particular of properties of the detected Higgs boson – as well as early-Universe evolution as complementary means to search for New Physics, using data from colliders and from cosmological observations. More information on the activities of the group can be found here: https://www.desy.de/~braathen/emmy-noether-research-group.html. Depending on the strengths and preferences of the successful applicant, a doctoral project centered on either higher-order perturbative calculations or on phase transition dynamics can be envisioned.

The research group is part of the DESY Theory group, which is a leading center for theoretical High-Energy Physics in Europe. Its research program includes collider phenomenology (in particular Higgs and electroweak physics, physics beyond the Standard Model, flavour physics, QCD, Monte Carlo generators), particle cosmology, axions and other non-standard light particles, gravitational waves, string theory and mathematical physics. These activities are embedded within the Cluster of Excellence "Quantum Universe". See http://theory-hamburg.desy.de/ for more details.

Applications should be submitted via: https://ias.desy.de/pls/apex/f?p=1057:1

They should include a CV and a brief description of the applicant’s research interests and master thesis project (all in a single PDF file), as well as the names of at least two referees who will be asked to send letters of recommendation. To be considered for this position please remember to select the group “Beyond-the-Standard-Model Phenomenology and Precision Calculations, DFG Emmy Noether group of Johannes Braathen” the groups they want to apply to.

Review of applications will begin on 15 January 2025, but later applications will still be considered until the position is filled.

Salary and benefits are commensurate with those of public service organisations in Germany. Classification is based upon qualifications and assigned duties. DESY operates flexible work schemes. Handicapped persons will be given preference to other equally qualified applicants. DESY is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer and encourages applications from women. There is a bilingual Kindergarten on the DESY site.
