Job description:
Neutrino group at the Institute of Nuclear Physics (IFJ PAN) in Kraków is looking for candidates for a 2-year post-doc position. The work will focus on the analysis of experimental data from the T2K experiment with upgraded off-axis T2K near detector (ND280) as well as the involvement in the preparations of the Hyper-Kamiokande experiment.

The position is supposed to start in Autumn 2025 but the precise date is negotiable.

The successful candidate is expected to possess a PhD in physics (by December 2025), experience in the analysis of experimental data, solid programming skills and have a passion about work in fundamental research. An experience in high-energy physics experiments would also be appreciated but is not required.

The group offers very good working conditions in a well established world-leading neutrino experiment as well as the opportunity to participate in a quickly-developing future neutrino project. A salary will be appropriate to cover living expenses in Poland.

T2K (Tokai to Kamioka) long-baseline experiment is mainly designed to study neutrino oscillations. A high-intensity beam of muon neutrinos/antineutrinos is produced in JPARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Complex) on the east coast of Japan and sent through the near detector station (280 meters away from the target) to the far detector Super-Kamiokande - located at the distance of 295 km.
The change in the measured intensity and composition of the beam is used to provide information on the neutrino oscillation parameters. In addition, T2K off-axis near detector ND280 is used to study neutrino interactions and measure neutrino-nucleus cross-sections.
The Hyper-Kamiokande detector is planned to consist of an order of magnitude larger tank than predecessor experiment Super-Kamiokande's and ultra high sensitivity photosensors. The Hyper-Kamiokande detector is both a “microscope,” used to observe elementary particles, and also a “telescope” for observing the Sun and supernovas, using neutrinos. It is the aim of Hyper-Kamiokande to elucidate the Grand Unified Theory and the history of the evolution of the Universe through an investigation of proton decay and CP violation (the difference between neutrinos and antineutrinos), together with the observation of neutrinos from supernova explosions.
Hyper-Kamiokande is part of an international research project aiming to start operating in 2027.
The Neutrino group in Kraków currently comprises of three people and is involved mainly in neutrino cross-section measurements in the near detector ND280. Kraków team is a member of Polish Neutrino Group (PNG) which consists of 28 people in 6 institutions: Warsaw University, NCBJ Warsaw, Warsaw University of Technology, Wrocław University, University of Silesia, IFJ PAN Kraków. The institutions from Polish Neutrino Group cooperate closely in the following fields:
  • data analysis for physics studies (neutrino-nucleus cross-sections, neutrino oscillations),
  • event reconstruction,
  • software development,
  • development of MC simulations,
  • construction of the hardware.
