Job description:
The Neutrino Group at the University of California, Irvine invites applications for a postdoctoral research position. The successful candidate will contribute to hardware and software development, as well as data analysis, within the DUNE and NOvA experiments. The candidate will primarily work with Professor Bian. Bian's group is heavily involved in AI/ML reconstruction for DUNE and NOvA, DUNE detector production, quality assurance and installation, and NOvA oscillation analysis. Specifically, current research topics in Professor Bian’s group include:
  1. Deep learning-based neutrino reconstruction technologies in DUNE and NOvA.
  2. Statistical tools for neutrino data analysis.
  3. Neutrino oscillation analyses aimed at resolving Mass Ordering and CP violation.
  4. Neutrino-electron elastic scattering measurements to constrain neutrino fluxes.
  5. Liquid argon instrumentation, particularly DUNE/ProtoDUNE’s liquid argon purity monitors (miniature LArTPCs measuring electron lifetime in liquid argon).
  6. Cold Electronics for LArTPC at DUNE.
  7. Calibration and data analysis of protoDUNEs.
  8. Detector design, R&D and simulation for future neutrino experiments.
In addition to physics students and postdocs, Bian's group includes several students from UCI's computer science departments. These CS students collaborate with physics postdocs and students on deep learning algorithms and statistical tools for neutrino reconstruction and analysis.
A postdoctoral researcher in our group is expected to work on the DUNE purity monitor and cold electronics production, quality assurance, installation, and commissioning, as well as deep-learning reconstruction software development for DUNE and NOvA. The candidate is also expected to contribute to data analysis for NOvA and ProtoDUNE. The candidate must be able to travel to Fermilab, CERN, and SURF.
We are seeking candidates with a Ph.D. in experimental particle physics, with skills in both hardware and software/analysis. Applicants should prepare a curriculum vitae, a description of research interests, and arrange for three letters of recommendation. Applicants should apply via UC Irvine’s online application system, RECRUIT, located at https://recruit.ap.uci.edu/JPF09334.
