Abstract: (WSP)
We consider models of non-gravitational detectors of sub-vacuum phenomena, such as negative E^2 (negative mean-squared electric field) and negative energy density. One such indirect probe is an excited atom coupled to a quantized cavity EM field. Under certain circumstances, the system can function as a negative E^2-detector, and sometimes as an energy density detector as well. The effect is small, but potentially measurable, although perhaps with difficulty.
