Abstract: (ADS)
The neutrino opacity of pion-condensed neutron-star matter is calculated and found to be greatly enhanced over the values for ordinary neutron matter. For neutrinos of energy greater than 0.1 MeV, the neutrino free path may be less than the radius of the neutron star. The solution to the resulting neutrino-diffusion problem indicates that it may take as much as a few hours for a newly formed neutron star to cool to a temperature of the order of 0.1 MeV.
