Abstract: (Elsevier)
We study by Monte Carlo techniques a U(1) model with mixed action which possesses Z(2) strings and monopoles. The characteristic phase diagram of this kind of model is obtained. We show that the two different phase boundaries — the Z(2) and U(1) phase transitions — are associated with the condensation of strings and monopoles respectively.
