Abstract: (APS)
The present status of experimental studies of inelastic diffraction at the Large Hadron Collider is analyzed. The impact of the current uncertainties concerning the diffraction rate on the predicted extensive air shower development is investigated. A relation to studies of the primary composition of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays is illustrated by comparing numerical simulation results to the data of the Telescope Array experiment on the distributions of the shower maximum position.- 13.85.-t
