Abstract: (Elsevier)
The gravitational field produced by closed loops of string is calculated in the weak field approximation. It is shown that the gravitationally effective mass is exactly equal to the mass of the string, in contrast to the case of static string which produces no gravitational field. The rate of growth of density perturbations around spinning loops is calculated and it is shown that these could well give rise to galaxies. It also suggested that large-scale filamentary structures of the type recently observed by Giovanelli and Haynes are predicted in the string theory.
