Abstract: (Elsevier)
The density of nucleons in a nucleus is calculated by a semi-classical method due to Kohn and Sham which gives corrections to the Thomas-Fermi theory. The most important corrections are oscillations of wavelength π k F both near the surface and near the centre of the nucleus. The form of these oscillations in the limit of a very large nucleus is calculated. The results are compared with exact calculations for the density of nucleons in the nuclear shell model, but only rough agreement with the semi-classical results is found. The effects of various corrections to the simple shell model are considered.References(17)
