Abstract: (Elsevier)
The inelastic scattering of 16 O and 18 O projectiles by 58 Ni and 64 Ni has been studied to investigate the interference between Coulomb and nuclear excitation. The interference minimum for the excitation of the first 2 + state in 18 O is found to be shifted towards forward angles when compared to the excitation of the 2 + state in the Ni target nuclei. This shift could not be reproduced by first order DWBA calculations, but reasonable agreement was obtained in a coupled channel analysis allowing for reorientation effects. The coupled channel results depended sensitively on the values of the static quadrupole moments of the excited 2 + states.
