Abstract: (Elsevier)

A one-parameter family of gaugings of N = 8 supergravity is given. For positive values of the real parameter ξ, the SO(8) gauging is recovered, ξ = 0 gives the ISO(7) gauging, while for ξ < 0 a new SO(7,1) gauging is obtained. Despite the noncompact gauge symmetry for ξ ⩽ 0, the theory is ghost-free.
