Kümmel's maximum overlap idea is generalized so as to pave the way for an algorithm independent of the underlying symmetries of the corresponding hamiltonian. This is achieved by recourse to some aspects of atomic coherent states that enable one to work with suitable generating functions within the framework of the generator coordinate method.
