Abstract: (Elsevier)
After discussing properties of magnetic dipole modes on the basis of the structure of the nuclear magnetic dipole transition operator and the known properties of the nuclear particle-hole interactions several experimental examples for the occurrence of the so-called magnetic dipole scissors mode are given, including light vibrational nuclei from the fp shell and heavy rotational nuclei from the rare earth region. Aspects of the structure of this mode, its transition strength and relation to deformation, its orbital and spin character and its form factor are discussed in terms of the nuclear shell model.References(44)
