Abstract: (Elsevier)
The non-linear terms in the Weinberg chiral lagrangian for pion-nucleon systems give large individual contributions to the S-wave pion-nucleus optical potential, but strong cancellations leave only an insignificant net contribution. The cancellation is exact in the zero range limit. These terms also give rise to 4-nucleon interactions which however only marginally affect nuclear binding.- PI NUCLEUS: NUCLEAR REACTION
