Abstract: (AIP)
A method of mobility and ionic lifetime measurement of alpha emitters from the 228Th/220Rn decay chain is presented. The choice of 220Rn chain over 222Rn is based on the fact that the shorter nuclear lifetime of 220Rn and 216Po allows for easy determination of their mobility and ionic lifetime in the setup described, assuming no isotopic impact on the investigated physical properties. A typical mobility of positively charged 216Po measured is on the order of 0.5 cm2 s−1 V−1, while the ionic lifetime is approximately >1 s (and is expected to be much longer for ultra–pure gases).
