Abstract: (Elsevier)
We investigate decoupling of a heavy quark in QCD renormalized by minimal subtraction. The relation between the coupling α MS and the effective coupling α MS − characterizing the theory below the heavy quark threshold is discussed to all orders of perturbation theory. This relation can be used to systematically determine the scale parameter Λ MS − of the effective theory in terms of the scale parameter of the theory which includes the heavy quark, or vice versa. For phenomenological applications we plot corresponding results valid to two and three loops.
