Abstract: (Elsevier)
We show that in a relativistic theory of nuclear matter the usually suppressed beta decay of neutrons n → p + e − + g ̄ n e is allowed. It can serve as a cooling mechanism. The theory also predicts the existence of real pions inside dense neutron stars. These conclusions rest primarily on the correct phenomenological description of symmetry energy in symmetric ( N = Z ) nuclear matter.- NUCLEAR MATTER: FIELD THEORY
