Abstract: (Elsevier)
A set of 10 theoretical and phenomenological constraints are imposed in order to find all preon theories consistent with the observed family patterns of quarks and leptons and in which these composite light fermions contain 3 valence preons. The complete solutions to these restrictions is obtained and it is shown that they severely reduce the possible physical theories to a few cases, which are consistent with observation. We establish that these models necessarily are related to an elegant supergroup structure. The question of fermion masses is not answered in detail although a new dynamical mechanism emerges. In some models preons remain massless even though quarks and leptons receive mass.
