Abstract: (APS)
The boundary conditions of the first-quantized compactified closed bosonic string constrain the eigenvalues of the zero-mode operators. Requiring that internal symmetries result from compactification, we show that the simplest boundary conditions imply that the ‘‘left’’ and ‘‘right’’ lattices must be self-dual at the first-quantized level. The one-loop corrections to such models satisfy modular invariance.
