Abstract: (Elsevier)
The U(1) lattice gauge theory in five dimensions with action 1 2 βΣ p (U p + U + p ) + 1 2 γΣ p (U 2 p + U 2 p ) is numerically investigated. We show that the theory has only first-order transitions in the β , γ plane. This agrees with the expectation that the upper critical dimension for abelian theories is 4. We compare our phase diagram with 1/ d expansion results and find that there is qualitative agreement.
