Abstract: (Springer)
A Regge model with absorptive corrections is employed in a global analysis of the world data on charge-exchange pion-nucleon scattering at momenta above 4 GeV/c. In this region resonance contributions are expected to be negligible so that the available data allows one to determine the non-resonant part of the reaction amplitude reliably. The amplitude is then used to predict observables at low momenta. Differences between the predictions and data are systematically examined as possible signals for the presence of excited baryons. It is found that the data available for the π − p→π 0 n differential cross section, forward reaction cross section and imaginary part of the charge-exchange amplitude clearly indicate significant contribution from excited baryons with masses up to 3 GeV.
