Abstract: (Elsevier)
Strings are believed to provide an effective description of QCD, at least in some approximation such as the large N c limit. We consider the question of how the effects of θ vacua can be represented in the string description. A term like exp( iθc 1 ( Σ )), where ( c 1 ( Σ ) is the first Chern number of the normal bundle (related to the self-intersection number of the world surface), has some of the required properties.
