Abstract: (Elsevier)
Perturbative corrections to Wilson loops are computed up to order g 4 on lattices of several sizes. A renormalization group improvement of the perturbative expansions for χ ( I , J ) is discussed. An analysis is performed in which the perturbative background is subtracted from quantities measured in Monte Carlo simulations of SU(3) pure gauge theories, yielding a value Λ /√ σ =0.0112+−0.0004, in good agreement with that obtained from measurements of correlation functions of Polyakov lines.- LATTICE FIELD THEORY: STRING TENSION
