The lagrangian and hamiltonian of the SU(3) L × SU(3) R non-linear sigma model are given in terms of collective variables. It is argued that the model describes the octet and decuplet of baryons, and the interpretation of the unbroken symmetries of the system is given. The model is quantized and the numerical results are compared with the data.
