Abstract: (Elsevier)

The Fujikawa expression for gauge and gravitational anomalies is generalized to string field theory. This expression is related to a path integral of the heterotic string σ-model on a torus, in the limit in which the torus collapses to the circle. It is shown that this limit reproduces the anomaly in the field theory of the massless sector of the string.
