We report the results of a Monte Carlo calculation of the topological susceptibility χ t in SU(3) lattice gauge theory. We find no evidence of asymptotic scaling, but χ t varies with β in the same way as the string tension σ. Assuming σ = (420 MeV) 2 , then χ t = (221 ± 13 MeV) 4 , in reasonable agreement with the large N prediction of χ t = (180 MeV) 4 .
