Abstract: (Elsevier)
We show how superstring models with simple discrete symmetries may have an approximate Peccei-Quinn symmetry in the low-energy effective lagrangian. The breaking of this symmetry is very small and as a consequence in models with intermediate scale breaking the strong CP violation is reduced to an acceptable level. The resultant “pseudo-axion” has properties indistinguishable from the usual “invisible axion” and the scale of its coupling lies naturally in the acceptable range 10 8 –10 12 GeV.- MODEL: STRING
