We point out that much of the arbitrariness of the momentum subtraction schemes can be avoided by the use of the background field method, where the prescription is essentially fixed. The relationship between the thus renormalized vertex functions is considered and some comparisons to usual momentum subtraction are made. For the especially interesting Landau background field gauge alternative Feynman rules are presented.Note:
