We present full details of an earlier calculation concerning the statistical properties of cosmic strings. Our results are in good agreement with results from numerical simulations and have important consequences for the evolution of a string network. We also analyse a system of strings using periodic boundary conditions. Lastly we consider the statistical properties of a network of open and closed strings — this situation pertaining to a phase transition in the early universe where monopoles become connected by strings.- ASTROPHYSICS
