We formulate the string field theory of the heterotic string in light-cone gauge. To understand how the geometric continuity conditions that define the string interaction are implemented for the chiral torus coordinates, we study string field theory on a torus. Supersymmetry and SO 8 invariance determine the operator insertions necessary for representing the super-Poincaré algebra. The field theory of strings on orbifolds is sketched.- FIELD THEORY: STRING
