Abstract: (Elsevier)
We obtain the operator expression for the Weyl anomaly in a general renormalizable bosonic σ-model with the metric, antisymmetric tensor and dilaton couplings. The necessity of accounting for total derivative terms in the renormalization of the composite dimension-2 operators is emphasized. The identity resulting from the non-renormalization of the trace of the σ-model energy-momentum tensor is derived and is applied to perturbative computation of the dilaton β-function. Correspondence between the vanishing of the Weyl anomaly coefficients and the equations of motion for the massless fields which follow from the string-theory effective action is discussed.- FIELD THEORY: TWO-DIMENSIONAL
