Abstract: (Elsevier)
The sum rules for deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons from polarized protons or neutrons are re-examined in light of the non-conservation of the U(1) axial current in QCD. I derive inequalities (at large Q 2 ) ∫ 0 1 d x g ep 1 (x, Q 2 )⩾(1.18±0.01)[−α s (Q 2 )/π] and ∫ 0 1 d x g en 1 (x, Q 2 ) ⩾ (−0.82±0.01)[1−α s (Q 2 )/π] , which are likely to be saturated. The deviations of these results from parton model sum rules are direct consequences of the axial anomaly.- ELECTRON NUCLEON: DEEP INELASTIC SCATTERING
